Katarina Wit began skating at five. It was not long before her talents became apparent, and in Karl-Marx-Stadt she entered the school that was specifically made for kids with athletic abilities. She was introduced to Jutta Muller here. Witt was able to make her mark when she was ranked second at the 1982 World Championships, held in Copenhagen. Following that, she started winning the competition with elegance and grace. Olympic success Katarina (now Witt) was awarded the Figure Skating Gold Medal at the Sarajevo Winter Games. Her victory four years ago was a bit more tense. Although she lost in the free-skating contest, gold medal was awarded to her performance on the compulsory figures, as well as on the program in short form. Witt became the first female to take home a gold medal in both the men's and women's figure-skating competitions since Sonja Hiene. Hall of Fame Witt competed in the Lillehammer Winter Games in 1994 following a career that was successful acting. Although she didn't take home a single gold medal, she was awed by fans even with her seventh place finish. Witt was inducted into the World Figure Skating Hall of Fame on the 15th of April, 1995.
